What's on the Horizon for Alternative Energy

As the world's energy needs increase, the search for alternative ways of powering our homes and vehicles becomes more critical. Even though there are reasonable alternatives available today, many of them are expensive and somewhat difficult to implement. Current research and development promises several improvements to these technologies that will make them less expensive and more efficient over time.

There have been dramatic improvements in recent years to both solar and wind power alternative available for homes. Either of these modern solutions allows the average homeowner to install a solar or wind power system that can supply all of their power needs from a renewable source and eliminate their need to buy expensive power from the local utility. These core technologies will continue to improve and future versions promise to be more even efficient and easier to install.

In the case of solar there are several companies that are working on a solar-based roof tile that can be installed like standard roofing. These tiles will have the ability to generate small amounts of power individually with photovoltaic technology that can be combined to produce power for the home. These tiles will be less visible than a standard solar panel and more durable as well over time.

Another company is developing a hybrid solar panel that combines several advantages into a single panel. First, it is a highly efficient solar panel that also includes a micro-inverter in the cabinet. This means that the DC current being produced by the solar panel can be converted directly to AC current that can be used by the home inside the panel itself. This makes installation and expansion of the system easier since the homeowner can simply snap additional panels together to grow their system. These panels also include a solar heating webbing in their construction as well that allows the homeowner to heat their homes water. This enables these panels to serve several functions in the same amount of roof space and makes it easier for most homeowners to install.

Alternative fuels for our vehicles are also improving and the all-electric vehicle is still being limited by the current battery technology. As these batteries improve both the top speed and the distance of these vehicles will improve and they may someday replace other styles of vehicles as the primary car.

In the interim, hybrid style vehicles can help bridge the gap by providing ways to extend the distance these electric vehicles can travel. These hybrids use a small gasoline engine to charge the batteries while driving so that the car can drive longer distances betweens charges.

Other conventional fuels look to be increasing replaced by natural alternatives such as ethanol and bio-diesel as production and improvements on these fuels continue. The advantage of using either of these fuels instead of gasoline is that they are produced locally from renewable crops and they produce fewer emissions as well to hurt the environment.

Liquefied petroleum gas is another attractive alternative that is in widespread use today. The adoption of this alternative fuel is being driven by the driver's ability to find filling stations that offer it for their cars. Several fuel retailers have expanded their stations ability to dispense this type of fuel with plans to offer many more over time.

All of these developments mean that the future looks brighter for alternative fuels for our homes and cars. These alternatives promise to be cheaper and cleaner with less impact on our planet. They also are based on renewable sources which means we will never have to worry about depleting a precious resource to provide the power we need to live.
